Our Story

About Us

The Kava Bar Pool League (KBPL) was founded by Mike Ercole and Matt Shand. Two veterans who discovered purpose, connection, and camaraderie through the game of pool and the welcoming atmosphere of kava bars.

After years of competing in traditional pool leagues, they noticed something missing: community. Drawing from their experiences in veteran life and the community-first spirit of kava culture, they set out to create something different — a league that goes beyond the game.

KBPL was built to reflect a bigger mission: uniting players through purpose, play, and a sober, supportive space.

To create an alcohol-free pool league that fosters genuine connection, inclusivity, and mental wellness — offering a place where individuals, especially veterans and the next generation of players, can compete, belong, and thrive.

Our Mission

To become the leading national model for sober social leagues — starting with pool and kava, and expanding into a movement that redefines how community is built through recreation.

Our Vision

Our Values

  • Everyone deserves a seat at the table and a spot on the team.

  • We champion kava culture as a meaningful alternative to alcohol-centric environments.

  • Founded and operated by veterans, we’re committed to creating safe, welcoming spaces for those who served.

  • Sportsmanship, fairness, and respect come first — on and off the table.

  • Pool is for everyone — from the curious newcomer to the lifelong player. We’re building a league for misfits, dreamers, and the next generation of community builders.
